Top 100 baby names in Australia for 2015

Charlotte still reigns as the number one girls’ name in Australia, according to the latest Top 100 Baby Names list released by social researchers McCrindle this week.

The number one boys’ name is Oliver.

The latest data — released in 2018, but based on the baby names of 2017 — has shown that Oliver and Charlotte are again the most used baby names in Australia.

There were 1687 baby girls named Charlotte in 2017 and 2063 baby boys named Oliver. This is their third year together at the top — they were also the most used baby names in 2016 in Australia and 2015.

There were a number of changes to the Top 100 in 2017, with 7 new boys’ names and 5 new girls’ names in the top 100.

New this year are Arthur (83rd), Bodhi (93rd), Jude (94th), Asher (97th), Leon (100), Aaron (98th) and Harley (99th). Leaving the list this year are Chase, Nathan, Christian, John, Lewis, Maxwell, Marcus and Hayden.

For girls, the new names in the Top 100 are Freya (66th), Luna (83rd), Harlow (85th), Elena (94th) and Millie (96th). Outgoing names are Paige, Alyssa, Hayley, Thea and Molly.

Charlie is the only name on both lists — 11th on the boys’ list and 98th in the girls’.

And we continue to be influencing by celebrities and royals.

Luna (debuting at 83rd) is the name of John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s daughter (born 2016), Penelope (rising from 54th to 48th) is the name of Kourtney Kardashian’s daughter (born 2012). Evie (13th) is the name of Carrie Bickmore’s daughter (born 2015) and Billie (57th, up from 67th in 2016 and 82nd in 2015) – the name of AFL player, Chris Judd and wife, Rebecca Judd’s daughter (born 2014).

The births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte has contributed to the rise in popularity of those names. Except to see a lot more babies named Louis on next year’s list!
