Film Review: Ruby Sparks

From the makers of Little Miss Sunshine comes the adorable Ruby Sparks, a delightful bittersweet comedy about the magic of finding the perfect partner and falling hopelessly in love.

Calvin (Paul Dano) is a published novelist who has lost the inspiration to write, until he begins dreaming about a beautiful, alluring girl, Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan). With Ruby clouding his imagination, Calvin finds the words begin to simply pour out of him as he brings his dream girl to life. Calvin works night and day on his new novel until Ruby makes an unexpected appearance…in his kitchen.

Sweet, kooky, and heart-warming, Ruby Sparks is a crazy interpretation of the idea of falling in love with the wrong person. Calvin and Ruby are both fantastic characters who seem meant for each other, but like every relationship, they have their disagreements – that and the fact that one of them isn’t actually real.

Being a figment of his imagination, Calvin changes Ruby whenever he pleases to suit his mood or his needs. While this seems like an ideal scenario for Calvin, he soon learns that changing someone doesn’t necessarily mean making them better.

Lessons learned in Ruby Sparks could be relevant to anyone, especially the idea of valuing and respecting your partner, even if you don’t always see eye-to-eye. Differences can be infuriating, but they are part of the fabric of who we are, whether we like it or not. Beautifully acted, both of the main characters are a joy to watch in this magical, light-hearted film.
