Birth story: the birth of baby River

birth storyOn June 19 I was booked in to be induced due to elevated blood pressure and excessive swelling.

I attended hospital where gel was inserted at 5.15pm to soften the cervix. I was on the trace which showed good fetal heartbeat but no contractions. By 7.20pm I started losing bloody mucus. I was taken off the trace and moved to the ward. My mum arrived from Melbourne just after I was moved – she was my birth photographer.

By 1.45am, June 20, mild contractions had started. I used the shower to ease the pain which was primarily in my back. By 2.40am I was moved back to the birthing suite where another trace was done which showed the mild contractions. I had another shower and by 4am contractions had stopped intensifying.

At 7.45am my waters were broken by the obstetrician and I was 1cm dilated. At 8am the drip was started to progress the contractions. Contractions were more intense and more frequent.

At 9.30am I tried the gas and a Maxalon injection was also administered for nausea but a negative reaction to one of these sent me a bit loopy. I begged the midwife to allow me to shower for back pain and I was permitted 15 minutes in the shower while some pethidine was ordered. I was now 3-4cm dilated.

At 11.05 the pethidine was administered. It was from here that things progressed quickly. I sat on end of bed with the soles of my feet together rocking round and round, back and forward – similar to how you use the exercise ball. I was in a zone. I would grab onto my partner during contractions but otherwise I just rocked.

It was 11.35am when I started feeling the need to push and was struggling to not push through the contractions. The midwife Anna did an internal and said I was about 6cm dilated. I kept repeating the need to push so at 11.45 she checked again and said 9cm but that she wanted someone else to check. A second midwife checked at 11.50am and said I was fully dilated.

I wanted to be on all fours but I pushed through the first contraction on my back before moving. I pushed through next contractions on all fours and 20 minutes later – at 12.10pm – River arrived.

She was passed through my legs to me so I could discover her gender and I got to cuddle her while mum cut her cord. She was then given to my partner while I moved onto my back to deliver placenta. The OB arrived just after placenta delivered and checked me over sewing up a few areas.

River Elisabeth was a healthy 6lb4oz at birth. Length of 47cm. Head circumference of 33cm.
