Default More funding for IVF treatment

    More funding for IVF treatment

    May 01, 2007 02:43pm

    Article from: AAP

THOUSANDS of couples struggling to become pregnant can now access cheaper medical help after expanded Medicare funding for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) began today.
The Government is subsidising treatments to help overcome male infertility, including a procedure to surgically remove sperm and inject it into the egg, known as Intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
"Around 8000 couples a year are expected to benefit from these new funded (Medicare subsidised procedures)," Health Minister Tony Abbott said.
"The Government recognises that male infertility is a significant factor in couples seeking assisted reproductive techniques and that (the injection) is an important treatment option for couples who may not otherwise be able to achieve a pregnancy."
Patients have previously had to pay for the injection themselves, but now the Government will pick up the bill at a cost of $28 million over five years.
Mr Abbott said the subsidy, which was announced in November last year, was in response to the Independent Review of Assisted Reproductive Technology.
The study was commissioned because the Government was concerned about the growing cost of IVF, although it later decided against introducing caps on procedures such as restricting Medicare funding for older women undergoing IVF.

I think this is fantastic for those who need to use the services of an IVF treatment

However the sceptic within me cant help but wonder if this is all a part of Mr Howards incentives to increase the amount of workers within in Australia to provide taxes in order to support our aging-population...

As if the baby bonus wasn't enough...
