Default At what age would you allow your child to have a circumcision, if they wanted one?

At what age would you permit your child to be circumcised, if they wanted it? I am relating this idea to when young girls want their ears pierced (or young boys), as I know a woman who is vehemently anti-circ, yet she pierced her own daughters ears when she was 13 years old.

So....when would you relent and say "...okay....it's your body, you are old enough to be responsible for your decision, lets get it done....." ?

Also, if you had a son who was struggling, for medical reasons, at what point would you give in to their pleas to 'fix it'? I personally struggle with this, as the longer I say 'just wait to see if it gets better', the more I feel like I am practicing controlled crying, which makes me feel .

(and just as a side note, it is kept clean, washed in water only, we have tried all the magic lotions and potions (no steroids , as that is unnatural), panadol....been there done that blahdeeblah etc etc, I am not looking for 'help', just opinions if it were you in my shoes with a child who wants 'fixing').

Hmm, thats a tricky one.. I guess It would depend on the child?

I would want them to talk to a professional (surgeon and councellor) to make sure they were making that decsion with all the facts.. and that it was not something they might regret.. (I guess I would not do that for pierced ears, cause the holes can close over with very little side effects)

Its a very big decsion, I would prefer them to be "fully grown" before they made it.. But I would want to support my child too! Very very hard decsion..

I think a major difference here is that it is medically required, yes? I assuming that if he is in pain.

I don't agree with circ'ing for aesthetic reasons, basically the to look like Dad excuses but I wouldn't treat having to be circ'ed for a medical reason unlike having to have an appendix removed for medically reasons.

I wouldn't routinely have my kids appendix out just incase they became inflamed or infected as I wouldn't have a son's penis circ'ed just incase it became a health issue. But if there was a problem then I feel it is my decision to have medical intervention to keep my child out of pain or healthy no matter what his age. I would get other opinions and not have it done at the first medical advice but if it was unavoidable then I would have no hesitation to have it done.

So if my son wanted to have the procedure done for the look...then he can get it done when he is 18....if for medical reasons which will not rectify themselves over time then I'd have it done ASAP.

if you had a son who was struggling, for medical reasons
    Based on this comment..
I would allow him to get it done asap...
To not allow it and leave him struggling and in pain due to medical reasons and through no fault of his own is cruel IMHO..

For "looks" he can make that choice when he is 16+

If there was a medical reason for getting it done I would make sure that all other medication ect had been tried then I would let it happen if it was the only answer.

As for cosmetic reasons he would have to wait until he was 18 just like if I had a daughter that wanted to get her boobs done she would have to wait until she was of a legal age and old enough to pay for it herself.

Cripes Becca - you come up with some curly ones...

If it was purely cosmetic they would have to be over 16 or 18 I think... I would compare it to a daughter asking for a boob job, and I wouldn't be allowing that to happen while I had a say in it (unless she had quadruple E cups and a broken back maybe )

As for the medical one - well, that is too hard to say. I guess I would have to discuss it with my son and a sensitive specialist and take it all into consideration.

If my son needed it for medical reasons i would have it done immediately. For cosmetic reasons he can have that when he's 18 if that is what he wants. But i will not be encouraging it at all.

I do not support it for cosmetic reasons at all

If it was medically necessary then he could have it done whenever he wanted.

If he wanted it done for his own personal reasons then I would have to know that he is committed to it, and I can't predict that because I don't really know who we have here yet, he's only 9 months old.

I would try and talk him out of it though.

Firstly I think there is a HUGE difference between a girl getting their ears pierced and a boy getting circumsized..

I am agreeing with everyone here in saying that I would Let him get it done for cosmetc reasons wen he is 18 OR could pay for it himself...

But if it was for medical purposes i would get it done immediatly....

I think the comparison here would be what someone has already mentioned a girl getting a boob job and I wouldnt let her get this done until she could either pay for it herself or is 18... But I would try to talk her out of it...
