    Default Ovarian hyperstimulation

I will be starting my first round of IVF in a few weeks. I have been advised by my specialist that due to my low weight and high egg count I am at high risk of getting hyperstimulation. Has anyone else had this and could pls tell me if I do get it what I can expect. What he has told me has me freaking out a little bit. Thanks so much

I can’t help you with actually how to deal with hyper stimulation as I was lucky never to experience it myself. However I did 7 rounds of stimulation and egg collections for IVF and was also high risk due to my high AMH level of 117 and the large number of eggs that I collected each cycle. 29 was my biggest haul and as I say never experienced it myself. My fertility specialist always had me drink tomato juice due to the salt content, sustagen and hydrolites after each collection to prevent OHSS as much as possible. Some cycles I was also given extra meds too to help. Hope you also are lucky and don’t get to experience it personally, hope all goes well with your cycle x

You may be lucky - I have a high AMH and they started me on super low dose stims because I was at huge risk for OHSS. First 3 cycles were cancelled as I wasn’t responding at all to the stims. Had to tweak my protocol and go up to almost max stims, and still only got 3 eggs on rounds 4 and 5.

I had very mild OHSS developing at round 5. It was the first time I’d had more than 3 follicles and was very bloated and in pain. Had 12 follicles but still only got 3 eggs.

Post retrieval I increased my sodium slightly and drank lots of Gatorade/Powerade instead of water. By the time of my fresh transfer I was nowhere near as bloated or in anymore pain. That cycle did the trick, and Bub is now 15mo.

FWIW, the IVF “tradition” of maccas chips post EPU and transfer is because of the sodium. People often don’t realise where that started.

I ended up with OHSS after my first EPU which resulted in a freeze all and I also had to inject clexane for two weeks. My stomach was horridly distended and I felt pretty average. I did drink heaps of Powerade but I had never heard of the maccas chips post EPU!!! FX you will be be okay.....good luck with your cycle

I had low AMH but surprised everyone and got 33 eggs.

I got mild to moderate OHSS and it was not pleasant at all. Bloating, nausea, vomiting, decreased urine output, diarrhoea then constipation.

I also know someone who got OHSS with only 3 eggs so it is unpredictable.

If you're doing a planned freeze all, they will probably give you a Decapeptyl trigger which eliminates the risk of OHSS.
