It’s definitely sad news for the royal family. He didn’t look too crash hot when he left hospital a few weeks ago. I did say to DH back then that I wondered if he was going home to die. I wonder how the Queen will hold up? When you’re married to someone one for 70+ years you have to imagine it’s going to be pretty difficult to go on with life...

    I thought that too...

I feel she will step aside sometime this year and we will have Charles at the throne

i just can’t see charles on the throne. he’s not really likable enough, i mean he’s not really publicly adored. i would’ve thought wills and kate would be the better choice, but not sure how that would play out with charles getting skipped.

anyway, i guess we will find out in due course.

Can Charles choose not to take the throne? I can’t see him doing that but surely he recognizes that it will be better in terms of likeability of the royal family if it’s Kate and Will rather than him.

I fully agree. I can't see him on the throne, and honestly would prefer to not see him there, but what I personally feel doesn't matter 😅

Charles is next in line. So unless he abdicates, he will be king when the Queen steps aside/passes.

I wonder how she feels about it all? It would truly suck knowing if she is no longer in charge, it falls to Charles and he is not as popular as William. They've had a rough time in the past while, so I can hardly imagine she'd feel content knowing the general population would prefer William, but apart from her staying in power as long as she can, there's nothing else she can do.

They really need all the public brownie points they can get.... and putting Charles in charge would lose them.

maybe it’s just time for the monarchy to disband? they’re largely ceremonial anyway these days, not like the queen/king is the ultimate ruler of state like back in the old days.

yeah you’re right, charles is next in line so it would have to go to him unless he abdicates. maybe the queen will have a quiet word with him and vigorously encourage him to stand aside so the crown lands on wills’ head.

I wonder what a world without the monarchy, at all, would actually look like?

there’d be far less royal paparazzi and gossip for starters. the british economy would probably tank due to tourism failing; i’ve heard from former uk residents that the royal family do a lot for tourism.

my issue with them is what they represent; absolute privilege as a birthright, not from hard work. it’s so classist and elitist to have a select few, who’ve done nothing except be born with blue blood, be fawned over and tax payer funded. i know the queen has always taken her duties very seriously and put her role ahead of all else, but the rest of the royal family not so much. i just think it’s time to let them go, they’re nothing more than tradition stuck in a time warp.

or, if the brits want to keep them, they can. but i can’t see their relevant to modern day australia. it’s time we cut those commonwealth sovereign ties once and for all.
