Default Train line or busy road, which would you choose to live on...

If you were forced to choose?

Note: *busy* road, not a main road - quietish much of the day and night but quite busy at peak times.

I've done both and I would choose train line. It's not as constant and the fear of kids and cars is stressful for me.

Would depend how close to the train line and how often trains go through?

If it’s trains regularly and overnight then I think I’d prefer the busy road.

When we were building our house a couple of years ago, we rented a house between a train line and a main highway which has a lot of trucks. The house was back from the road as a battleaxe so it was much closer to the train line than the road. The passenger trains weren’t that bad but it’s also a route for freight trains and they are noisy, long and frequent, even in the middle of the night. If there were no freight trains I’d probably consider train line but ultimately I would choose neither 🤪

Train. I don't live on the train line but a few blocks over. We honestly don't notice it.

    Probably the busy road.

Having said that, I have not lived on a train line before. I've always wondered how disruptive it might be. We have friends that have a train line reasonably close to their home and they aren't bothered by it at all.

If I had babies/toddlers, I'd be more nervous about the busy road.

train line. as annoying as it would be, a busy road with little kids scares the crap out of me. we live a few streets away from a very busy road and i can’t think of anything worse than living along it.

    Without kids - busy road

I used to live on a busy road through my teen years and we had a bus stop right near our house on both sides and it was never too bad except for Friday & Saturday nights when you would get drunk people screaming and shouting getting on/off as it was one of main bus routes into the city.

    With kids - train line

I looked at a rental that was directly opposite a train line and ended up asking the neighbours how bad it was and they said you don’t really notice after a while, there was the freight trains that would go through regularly in the night and then passenger trains in the day and they said it wasn’t all that bad. Maybe you could do a trial and go out there when it’s night/quiet to hear how loud it is when they go past?

I think you get used to the noise. My DH’s parents used to live on a main road. DH’s bedroom was at the front of the house and I’d stay over a couple of nights per week before we moved in together, and after a little while I didn’t hear the cars at all.
