Am I right to find this weird?

Okay... So it's a favour for a favour then. Although let's be frank, it would cost a lot more to hire someone to come around and check on your pets than it would to buy a carton of eggs. Going rates around here are about $40 per check.

I find it weirder that people pay their neighbours $40 per check to basically feed a pet.

Where did I say paying a neighbour? I said 'hire someone'. If she had no trustworthy neighbour to keep an eye on her pets, then she'd have to pay someone (i.e. a pet sitting business) to do it.

We have keys to each other's houses. Usually to pop a package inside if delivered while the other is away. We are good friends and I'm not upset about it, just found it strange.

I think it's weird, and id be a little uneasy about it... But in saying that, if I gave someone a key to my place I'd feel comfortable enough to have them there.

If I give anyone keys to my place while we're away I just assume they'll be eating my porridge and sleeping in my bed.
