    Default Early viability scan

    Hi everyone,

I’m 5 weeks and 2 days today and yesterday 5weeks, 1 day) I went to emergency as I was having lower abdominal pains on my left. An ultrasound was organised to screen for an ectopic. Fortunately, the gestational sac was found in the right place however there was no sign of a yolk sac or fetal pole. The sonographer felt that this was a non-viable pregnancy.

My HCG levels have also been multiplying normally and my levels yesterday were ~6700.

This morning I spoke to my Fertility Specialist who confirmed that it’s simply too early to see anything.

Has anyone had experience with something like this and has gone on to have a healthy baby?

Yeah 5 weeks is too early, your fs is right. Did the sonographer know your dates before she made the comment about non viability? Lots of women wouldnt have seen anything that early. They dont usually do scans that early for that reason.

Thanks for your reply. The sonographer asked me my due date. I hadn’t been given one as such but by my calculations via an ivf due date calculator, it would be 2nd August 2020. This is the date he was working from.

What @gorgeousgeorge said - also, ultrasound equipment in A&E is notoriously basic, if your A&E is anything like most they'd be unlikely to see as much as a specialist place would.

Your scan is exact to mine with my 3rd child. Sac, no feta pole nothing. Come back in two weeks they told me.
She just turned 13 last week.

I also had pain like that with my 6th child. I went in around the same time knowing I wouldn’t see any baby but to check it wasn’t ectopic. They found the sac again.
I went back at 8 weeks to follow up. She’s now 5 years old.

All the best, this is normal.

Yep, way too early to expect to see anything.

With my daughter we couldn't see anything but an empty sac until 8 weeks! No yolk sac, no fetal pole, no baby and no heartbeat. Then at 8 weeks there she was.

This pregnancy we could see nothing but an empty sac at 6w1d. No yolk sac and no fetal pole. By 6w3d we could see a flicker of a HB but it was so feint it was impossible to get a number on it. By 6w5d we had a HB of 112.

I would not be concerned at this stage at all

I've always had viability scans from 6 weeks..so 6 weeks and a few days and been able to see a hb. 5 weeks is too early.
