Not sure of the details of the Tasmanian clinic that closed (i think it was private?) but if there is no other service provider on the island, the government should be stepping in to provide this service asap, in my opinion, and the failure of the Tas govt to do so is something for which they should be broadly criticised. Terminations should be freely available in the public system, in my view.

    I agree.

I would assume it was a private clinic that has closed.

What is the availability of termination in the public system? Surely for medically necessary terminations it would have to be made available. I know in private hospitals in qld (with exception of the mater) will do medically necessary terminations.

My concern would be young girls, women in DV situations, lower socioeconomic groups, the likelihood of them being able to travel to the mainland would be negligible.

@Mum-I-Am, in Qld at least, availability of terminations in the public system is limited. Check these out - just found with a quick Google for my own interest ☺

Apparently "While there are no standardised data collection around unplanned pregnancy and abortions in Australia, it is generally accepted that somewhere between 10,000 and 14,000 abortions take place each year in Queensland. Last year, just 295 terminations were performed in Queensland's public hospitals, according to Queensland Health".

Hopefully it's better in other states!

    Gosh, it seems so backwards.

This explains the tassie situation a bit better.
