Default How can a Sonographer get it so bloody wrong??

    Hello!

I have a question for anyone who wants to answer it.

How can a sonographer get it so wrong? I had an ultrasound on Monday at a reputable imaging company within a private hospital to see where things were at for egg collection this week. She told me, and reported, that she found 8.

6 on the right and 2 on the left but I was told I needed another u/s today due to all of them not being as far along as they should have been.

So I went to my FS this afternoon who personally did an ultrasound on me and she found only 3... which is not enough for an IVF cycle. Shattered. Gutted. Flat.

How on gods green Earth can a professional who has studied for so long, get it so wrong?? And God knows how many other people she has mislead.

I don’t suppose 5 follicles can miraculously just disintegrate in two days???

    Edited: sonographer, not radiographer

oh sweet I know nothing about radiography. I do however know the stress and grief that is the IVF journey. It's a path that is bloody difficult to navigate with random pitfalls along the way.

All I can say is, hang in there.

    Sending you much love.

    xx

Do you know how big the supposed eight were? Small follicles can disappear pretty quickly from one scan to the next.

Also, different places use different criteria for what counts as a follicle being in the game.

Sorry to hear - that must have been a huge letdown.

I think you are not the only one. I do IVF interstate and my FS insisted I fly in early so she could do final scan before trigger as she has been burnt a few times by radiographers who got it very wrong. I thought it was overkill, but maybe not!

I get my scans done at a local IVF clinic.

Sorry you had a bad experience. It would have been a sonographer not a radiographer doing your scan.

As previously stated follicles can disappear for a number of reasons.

I think where ever possible it is always better to have your scans at the same place.

Also it depends on what size of the follicles the Sonographer was counting. Sometimes they count ALL of the follicles regardless of size. So maybe you do have 8 all up but only 3 that are of adequate size?
Sorry that this has happened. It’s a hard journey.

    Thanks heaps for that info.

My usual in-house sonographer was away so I had to use a different imaging place. The clinic called me that afternoon and apparently I had:

    6 on the Left - 1 x 18 and 1 x 16 + 4 under 12
2 on the Right - both under 12.

I don’t know the size of what my FS saw yesterday as I can’t remember, but the amount was completely different to what the sonographer apparently found. They mustn’t have been that big or great if she cancelled the cycle though. Thanks heaps again for your support

Thank you so much. It’s lovely to have support on this journey. It’s heartbreaking at times but support is great in helping me get through. I hope yours isn’t a long one and you get your baby soon too x

My journey through IVF was 10 years ago now (god where did that time go). I have 2 DD's, who are nearly 10 and 8. I still remember though some of the trials and tribulations along the way. All the very best.
