    Default IVF over 40's #48

@augieandaddie that is a very funny story re the needles

I have resisted going but am now willing to give almost anything a go. I was concerned about the herbs having watched The Checkout enough times to know that complimentary medications and vitamins are not really regulated properly in Australia. I have to scull to get down some of the tea.

I too have heard stories where it has worked for some people, hence here I am. I hope that it works for you this time round.

@Morning I haven’t tried acupuncture I’m petrified of seeing needles so I don’t know how I would go having so many in my body. But I have read like you a lot of stories of success with it so I think I may have to get over that fear and try

For me, acupuncture is a cake walk after navigating clexane injections, I still have to psych myself up every time I use one of those injections.

@cag14 I used to be completely needle phobic, I think acupuncture helped get me over it! They are teeny tiny little needles, and you don’t have to watch them go in (actually quite difficult to watch in some places) and they really only go in a mm so if you can handle ivf then you can deffo handle it! Some people use more than others but you can also ask them to take it easy the first couple of times and keep it to 10 or so before they stick you with 50, and build it up.

Hi everyone. I used this group extensively when I was cycling 2-5 years ago and drop by every so often to see how everyone is going but I usually don't post. I hope everyone doesn't mind, but thought I would drop some info in about Acupuncture as it seems to be the topic du jour. Apologies for the long post but thought it might help to have as much info as possible. If it isn't a topic of interest to you, just skip on down to the next post.

I have used acupuncture for both non fertility and when I was trying to conceive. When I was doing it for non-fertility pain issues I went to traditional practitioners and found it did absolutely nothing, in fact it was such a negative experience I promised myself that I wouldn't set foot in another acupuncturist office ever again. (I had the vibrating needles during that course, that someone mentioned earlier - definitely weird !)

When I was trying to conceive after numerous failed cycles and getting older and older, I decided to do the 'kitchen sink' approach and researched absolutely everything I could about fertility/conception options at the time. I ended up putting my previous experience aside and went and saw an Australian born Acupuncturist who specialised in fertility and had actually done a Doctorate at an Australian University on the effectiveness of Acupuncture and specialised in 2 areas, 1 of which was fertility.

What I learned ....... Acupuncture for fertility is actually divided into 2 different approaches. The first approach is the one for people (men and or women) trying to conceive a child naturally ie they might have irregular menstrual cycles, poor sperm quality, or a variety of other reasons but it is all about natural/IUI conception and usually uses a lot of herbs/teas as part of the process. The acupuncture pattern is fairly intense ie 2-3 times a week for months with a couple of breaks during that period of time. Apparently you need to allow 3 full menstrual cycles before assessing whether it is working for you.

The other approach is more for IVF conception and Acupuncture is only done around the time of transfer and is focussed on helping the embryo to embed properly by increasing the blood flow to the uterus (same concept as using Asprin and/or Clexane). If you are doing IVF, you can do more Acupuncture before transfer but it is more about relaxation/soothing (both internal and external).

I can't tell you if it works but I am glad I did it and am sure it was part of the package of things that helped me get success. I was comforted by the fact everytime I went 'my guy' would take some health checks incl temperature, tongue colour and something else (I have forgotten !) and I could see the change (over the 6 months and during cycles) in these things I was seeing him. I wouldn't however, waste my time or money on it if it isn't something you really believe will help you.

Hopefully the info I have gathered helps those interested / wondering about IVF Acupuncture.

Thanks @Cathy69 your info is very helpful! If you did IVF, did you just do acupuncture on transfer day? I wanted to try it and wasn't entirely sure how often I should do it so thank you for posting your info!

Clexane is the worst! I took it for 16 weeks and had massive bruising from it, and marble-like lumps underneath it The bruising was still evident at the end of my pregnancy!
