Ds1 is 10 this year, and in grade 3. There is already people asking me about High schools. I have not even thought about it. I can't decide yet until he has an ENQ which wont be until Grade 5.
I already know he will score higher this time, and most likely wont qualify for funding or an aid... But I know he probably struggle. I know it's still 3 more years until then and he CAN come a long from now. But damn I don't need this kind of stress.

How overwhelming is the thought of high school huh?

I had a call from the school counsellor the other day. He told me that based on their assessments DS is still considered to have a mild intellectual disability and would qualify for a placement in an IM class if we find down the track that he’s really not keeping up with the school work in the mainstream class.

He suggested it can be beneficial to go with this option for high school rather than have him in all the bottom classes, as he’ll potentially be exposed to kids with behavioural problems/bullying.

I was really not ready for that conversation! Now that DS is in mainstream I just felt like he’d continue to thrive and that he’d be there for the rest of his schooling. I guess it’s good to know the option is there just in case though.

World Autism Awareness day today!! Hip hip horay!! We are an amazing community who is inclusive and accepting. I have never met an autism parent, carer or sibling that is judgmental or unappreciative. The wider community and nuro-typical world could learn a lot from us and especially our kids

I'm mum of a gorgeous 9yr old with asd. I consider him aspie, even if the terms not common anymore.
Divorced his dad a long time ago, and have found an amazing man who I'm TTC with and getting married to. My DS loves his step dad but so much happening at the moment makes things hard for him.
He's coping, but all the traits and emotional regulation issues are coming out.
My wonderful future hubby is learning with a baptism of fire on just how far you can and can't push DS, but he's super supportive and sometimes takes him to ot, psych or other therapies
