Default Paid parental leave work test

Government PPL question: trying to work out if I'm eligible. I've undertaken some paid work in the past year leading up to my second baby's birth (due next month), but not enough to meet the criteria. However I've done many hours of unpaid work for our family business. The work test eligibility on the Human Services website is confusing me. It states that working for a family business counts and says the following:
If you work for a family business, you can include your hours of work even if the business doesn’t make any income, provided you are working for financial gain or benefit.

Would you interpret this as meaning it must be paid work? Does anyone have experience with this?

I'm no expert but I'd understand that to mean you have to be paid for your hours of work. Best thing to do though would be to ring Centrelink and have a chat to someone about it, just to be on the safe side

Yes, I would interpret "working for financial gain or benefit" to mean paid work.

Yeah, i think that is the most likely interpretation. But - there are other possible interpretations too ie working for the financial benefit of the business. Like PP said, i would ring Centrelink to check.

I don't think it means paid work. You would have to have kept a log of hours and would need to prove the business exists, i.e. is registered to an ABN, but you do not have to have been paid a wage. It is to include small business owners who frequently will be working unwaged positions in the beginning.
Applying for the PPL as self employed person is pretty straight forward. I was approved a year or so ago and did not need to provide any proof of income, just personal details about my job, etc.
    Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I gave Centrelink a ring and, surprise surprise, they were unable to clarify despite me talking to a supervisor. Their suggestion was to put the application through and see what happens 😂

As others have said it doesn’t need to be paid work. You may need to provide evidence or some sort of log of activities.
