    Hi ladies,
I’m new to this group and I have a few questions about NKC testing.
A bit of background info first:
I’m almost 41 and my partner is 31. We have been TTC for almost 12 months.
At present we are seeing a FS at the RWH fertility clinic in Randwick. We have had a variety of tests done and most recently I had a HSG over at the RPA after a HYCOSY in Feb showed I may have bilateral tubal occlusion. I also opted to get it done with the lipoidal flush. This HSG showed that the right tube was all clear and left tube had some minor blockages which the specialist was able to unblock easily on the spot. My partner’s most recent SA revealed issues with morphology and count.
My background is as a Naturopath so we are both adhering to quite a strict healthy diet, and appropriate herbal medicine and nutritional supplements etc. We are both also receiving Chinese herbs and acupuncture. We are hoping that this will lead to the ability to conceive naturally. However we are open to IVF if needed.
It was my acupuncturist who recently mentioned to me that it may be appropriate (due to my recent history of autoimmune thyroid issues) to consider getting tested for NKC (blood test, not uterine biopsy at this stage) prior to potentially having to undergo IVF later this year.
I was just wondering if any of you have had a GP referral to get tested for NKC. If so, which lab were you referred to?
My acupuncturist believes Laverty do it (I’m in Sydney), but when I called them directly they told me they don’t offer this test.
I guess what I’m looking for is the exact name of the test(s) that I need to GP to refer me for (if this is even possible) and a lab that tests for it. My acupuncturist gave me the name of a GP she has a good relationship with and she said she will refer me for relevant tests. When I have looked into it it seems that only a handful of fertility clinics carry out these tests....
Or is this not the case?
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much x

    Hi

I’ve had NK cells testing at both Laverty’s and my clinic.

My fertility clinic tested me for:
    CD3-56+
    CD69+(CD55) ‘Dim’NK cells
    CD57
    (Clinic’s own lab).

I have also been tested at Laverty’s. Here’s what to ask for:

    Absolute lymphocyte count

Cell count % and Absolute Count for each of:
    CD3 - / CD16+ NK cells
    CD3 - / CD56+ NK cells
    CD3+ / CD16+
    CD3+ / CD56+
    CD57
    CD57/CD8
    CD4+/CD25+/CD127+ (T regs)
    CD300+ NK cells

Just be aware that the GP probably won’t be able to interpret the results. You may need a specialist to do that. There are some reference ranges for the absolute count, but often it’s the cell count % that indicates high NK cells and no ranges quoted.

Thanks so much for this feedback! My acupuncturist actually has quite a bit of insight into this area as she mostly treats couples going through IVF and she sees a lot of women who have high NK cell count and other AI stuff going on. She approaches this with TCM.

Can I also ask how long ago you were tested through Laverty?

Who is your Acupuncturist and the GP they referred you too? I’m looking for a knowledgeable one and in Sydney too.

Everything that was given to you above is true, laverty have a more comprehensive testing according to my RI BUT no reference ranges so he does the interpreting and treatment accordingly.

It’s unfortunate we are light years behind with reproductive immunology, the leaders being this in the USA. For what it’s worth I learn a lot from Dr Jeffery Bravermans website around rep immuno and there is a book by Alan Beers but it’s outdated now, still great for newbies to learn basics.

Also I get my testing every 2-3weeks after treatment and since being off treatment probably a little more variable and sporadic.

    Wishing you lots of luck!!!

So these tests from Laverty you mentioned - which lab did you visit? Was it one in Sydney? Did you have these tests done within the last 6-12 months? I will check on their website again and give them a call to see. It’s so weird that they said they don’t test for NKC at all...
Not sure if we are allowed to name practitioners on here?? Maybe ok as long as not FS?? Hopefully ok to say - Sally Charles in Bondi is my acupuncturist.

I see a reproductive immunologist so NK cells is his day job. He sends ladies for these tests every day around the country. He just says go to any Laverty’s.

I just walked into the one in Bankstown as it was on my way home from his office.

The lady did take a fair while to look up all the tests to work out how many vials needed etc - they don’t see these tests often! They are then sent centrally for processing which is why you should be able to go to any Laverty’s.

Great your acupuncturist will be able to interpret.
