    Ummm.. Cronulla riots, anyone?

I don't know if there's less overt hate (especially given current sentiments about Muslims), but if there is, i think things like racism have just become more insidious and more 'hidden' than before in a lot of ways.

And as for the idea 'society is always getting more progressive' etc, i read a scary article recently about how Gen Y folk were more rigid about gender roles etc than a lot of previous generations...

I don't think we can take social progress for granted, unfortunately.

    I think we still hate.
I think social media has provided another new avenue for hate speech, I mean you only have to follow Clementine Ford or Yassmin Abdel-Magied and read the comments.
My DH says progress is slow and I don't know that I agree.
    I want more.

We still have a long way to go, but I think we are far less hateful than the generations before us.

Gen Y, especially, has grown up with the internet at our fingertips and I think that has played a huge role in us having more understanding and acceptance of other cultures, sexual orientations etc.

I often wonder what our government and politics will be like when it's filled with gen Y. We seem to have more care for those in different situations to our own.

I dont think 'hate' is the right word for what our generation (X) does.

I think for the most part the days of kicking your kids out because they are gay, or crossing the street to get away from a black person are over and done with. But racism and bigotry are definitely alive. I dont think we are as likely to deny someones humanity the way previous generations did but there are still strong elements of society that still think people different than themselves are still somehow 'bad,' As a generation I dont think we 'hate' but we certainly dont 'accept' everyone either.

It seems the generation before us made everyday racism not ok, we've made every day homophobia not ok and our kids are probably going to bring around real religious freedom and acceptance.
