Nope not on the list. And our favourite girl's name has fallen off the list.

    Well this sucks.
All the names on my list were chosen because they were traditional enough to not be considered weird, but rare enough that we'd never met anyone with these names. We didn't want our child to go to school with a bunch of other kids with the same name (like I did).
And every single one of them is in the top 50. How the hell did that happen?!

Don't stress too much. To put it in perspective there are over 300,000 babies born each year. The top names are only used 1817 times for girls (charlotte) and 2145 times for boys (Oliver). This means that if we assume a 50/50 gender split in births charlotte will be used roughly every 83rd female birth and Oliver every 70th male birth. And by the time you get down to the 50th 'most popular' name they're only being used 400 times for girls, 500 times for boys (which works out to 1 in 375 and 1 in 300 births respectively). So whilst these are not properly calculated statistical probabilities it does give the context that none of the names are really THAT common. Popular maybe but that doesn't mean they're common
If you love a name then use it because it's your child's name forever and it's just random luck if you do meet lots of others with the same name. My dd is in top 50 and she's 2 next month and in 2 years we haven't met one other baby with her name through swimming, gymbaroo, childcare etc! Even if we did meet others with her name I personally wouldn't care as it's a beautiful name, it suits her and I love it

@gingermillie thank you so much for taking the time to do the maths and to put that into perspective for me. Thinking about it from that perspective has actually made a massive difference, and I no longer feel so hesitant to go with a more popular name. It may be the pregnancy hormones, but I actually teared up reading that! 😊

All 3 of our boys names are on the list. They are the only boys in town that we know of with those names, noone with those names at either school and nor do we even know of any friends etc with those names so it's quite interesting to see their names on the list 😊

Both my sons names are on the list but they certainly weren't 10 and 12 years ago. So I agree with others who have said go with what you love and try not to worry too much about popularity.
