    Default WDYT - parking ticket

So I parked in inner city Melbourne this morning. Paid the fee at the meter, put a ticket on windscreen and went on my merry way.

I came back to find a fine on my car

Called the number on the ticket and they said I was fined because I didn't pay the fee at the right meter.
Yes I did use a meter that was ~200m away from the car, there was one closer but both meters had the same rate and it was the same council, so I didn't think twice about it.

Does that fine seem fair to you? Did you know one had to pay at the closest meter?

I live in Brisbane but assume the meters work the same.

All parking spots are within a certain section and a meter is used for that particular area.

    You cannot use another meter.

It is annoying but it is how it works (as the meters are now ticketless and all electronic then it makes sense - it would be too complex to check all numberplates/cars over large areas). So I think it is fair.

take it in to the council and contest it. they should reverse the fine as you did actually pay for parking.

How do one know about this rule? I checked the meter and the ticket, there's no mention of a zone etc

Did it have a number on it? As in a sign above it with 'zone xxx' with an arrow?

When I spoke to them they said it was unlikely it would be reversed.

I still requested an internal review with photo etc, so hopefully they'll reverse it.
If not they could at least reimburse me for the parking fee I paid ;-)

    Then absolutely dispute it.
Provide a copy of your ticket, the photo of signage etc.
    Mention the above.
What a load of toss, classic revenue raising.
    I'm angry for you 😡

I've never heard of that specific rule, but have successfully contested a parking fine under different circumstances by writing to the council.

You don't have anything to lose by writing them a letter explaining what happened and asking for the fine to be cancelled.

    http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/park...r-parking.aspx

Found this online. According to this the parking space has the number and the arrow to follow to the meter.

    Did you keep your ticket?
