    Default Concentration help

My ds1 7yo is really struggling with concentration.

He still struggles to spell his year 1 sight words, he is in year 2 now.

His reading is ok and we are working on that. It's the correlation between reading a word and writing a word that is amiss.

He can't sit still, will fidget, and if you ask him to write out a word 10 times he will get it right every time he sees it, but as soon as you cover the word, he gets it wrong.

He's not a silly boy and is quite clever I think. He has interest in all things that boys generally do, but he finds writing hard. He really struggles with sitting still and concentrating on reading a word and remembering it. He can't write a sentence yet, really.

I truly don't think he is on the spectrum although things like dyslexia or other learning disabilities have crossed my mind.

We've been to an OT before but they tailored to the 'generic' rather than him individually.

I don't know where to go for advice. I need high-level help - not just a regular tutor with regular exercises.

Help please. I'm sad for him.

Has his school got a guidance counsellor who can do some testing for various learning difficulties? Otherwise I would suggest seeing your GP for a referral to an educational/developmental psychologist for an assessment. Often the assessments can be expensive so it's good to see what his school can do first (and they can directly speak to his teacher), otherwise if there is a university near you they might have a psychology clinic where postgraduate students train and usually do assessments much cheaper.

In that situation I'd be getting a neuropsychology assessment to get a good idea of underlying cognitive issues. If cost is an issue, the school may be able to organize an assessment with a developmental/educational psych?
