When I was a newbie, I mainly posted in my Due group. My first post in the main forum was asking about circumcision. DH wanted it done, I didn't and was wanting some help/info. So you can imagine how that went

I don't think I posted I the main forum again for a good six months. Baptism of fire in to how things could be around here back then (2009).

Default Where has all the controversy, passion, debate and discussion gone?

Ha one of my first threads was what do you tease your child/baby about (or something along that nature), it was meant to be lighthearted but obviously turned sour very quickly about how you should never tease your child etc etc

I then followed it up with something like "have you let yourself go?"

    Very naive I was πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

People probably thought I was a troll

I think the problem happened when rather than posters agreeing to disagree it got to the point where people would tit for tat constantly and each time it got nastier and nastier.

Poster 1 would put forward their view, poster 2 disagreed, poster 1 reiterated why they thought they were right, poster 2 vehemently disagreed, poster 1 again banged out their views, poster 2 came back and shot them down again. It got to the point where it became predictable and frustrating. It's okay to have your say once, have it twice even, but then back away. You've made your point, no point getting the thread shut down simply because neither person would concede. You don't have to agree, simply say "well I disagree but I'll leave it there".

I think most people got to the point where they thought its simply not worth responding to threads because some members love a fight, not a debate, and they'd pick on any little thing and therefore people stopped even starting threads.

I'm certainly not capable of an intelligent debate these days myself so I avoid it.

But what I've seen since I've been hanging around is that when threads get controversial the 'players' pick each other's comments to pieces to suit their argument. Lots of quoted sections of comments etc. But you said... yes, but what I meant was...

You have to have a lot of time & energy to dive in & debate to the bitter end. And man you have to be on your toes because if you put a foot wrong - flames!

They usually go of course & end up debating about the price of bananas rather than the topic of school uniforms (for example) anyways

if you started a "have you let yourself go" thread now i reckon you'd be reported as a troll. actually someone should do it, just to see what happens. also, i'm genuinely curious re responses.

You said it way better than I did! this part in particular the 'players' pick each other's comments to pieces to suit their argument. Lots of quoted sections of comments etc. But you said... yes, but what I meant was...

See I think that's why the debate/ fiery threads have died.
Most of us have been here awhile, we all know better and much wiser in wording ourselves.
Plus we all kinda know each other in a weird bubhub way so know we don't mean offence.

I think the threads that garner the most controversy now are the ones asking for advice but just wanting to be told they are right. Particularly those that start lots of threads over the same issues. People get tired of the OP not listening and expecting only positive responses and give the OP an honest opinion. The OP gets upset, has a tanty, 'bully' tends to get thrown around and often 'I'm leaving'.

    Does my head in lol

Default Where has all the controversy, passion, debate and discussion gone?

I see a few potentially controversial threads have been started and I have to ask you ladies to please stop. We just arrived back from Melbourne and I have far too much organizing and laundry to do and cannot get sucked in!
