Default Shocked at what DP said today!

We moved to our farm 17 months ago. We've got 84 acres and run cattle on it. We've got a breeding herd of about 23 cows plus their calves and 11 that we hand reared. So all up we have about 47 cattle in total.

We've started to talk about getting a kelpie to help with mustering. Then we've also spoken to the guy who owns 120 acres down the road and he is also on a hilly property. Anyway so he musters his cattle with a horse and his three dogs (two kelpies and Huntaway).

I wasn't there last time he spoke to this guy, but today as we were driving past another neighbour who has 10+ horses, he jokingly put his hand over my eyes (he knows I'd love to have a horse, I've never hidden that from him). But then he goes "What does a horse cost to buy?" I said it really varies. Pure bred horses cost a lot, but I've seen some mixed breeds going for a lot less. It's obviously the ongoing cost that amounts to a bit, potentially.

Anyway, so he said "Oh well, if you get a part time job you can get a horse". OMG! Am a bit shocked he has finally agreed to it! Financially we're doing pretty well and earn money from our cattle. I think we would easily be able to pay for having one. Plus it would be put to work on the farm when we muster our herd.

No real point to this thread, I just had to tell someone! When I was a kid I dreamed of having a horse. When we moved out here I started to dream again Never in a million years thought DP would ever agree to!

Yay! I don't know when it'll happen, but just the mere fact that DP has started to entertain the idea is amazing. The main thing I would need to do to accommodate a horse is to fix up the fences in the paddock closest to the house. It's a total area of (at a guess) roughly 2-3 acres. Plus the trough is currently out of action so we would have to get that sorted. There's shelter under the big row of massive cypress trees and also under one end of the old dairy. I would also have to consider a paddock mate for it, either another horse or perhaps other animals like a few sheep. Could even offer agistment and get someone else's horse in there. I dunno. Exciting!

Wow that's awesome, very exciting. Dh and I would love to buy the local Angus farm if the lotto gods choose to let us win. I have always wanted a horse too and with 3 girls all horse mad it would be a dream come true for them. We would love a few gypsy cobs.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing a pic of your new farm Hand
