    Default fertility tests

My DH and I have been ttc for 9 months without success and thought i would take a look at the different tests to check infertility. Some of the test sound intimidating, i always get nervous before a pap smear never mind a Hysteroscopy etc. i guess my question is how long are the procedures and how bad are they are they painful?

My clinic does a tracking cycle first to check out your hormones throughout your cycle. It's mostly blood tests and ultrasounds. The ultrasounds are internal so that can be a little confronting if you haven't had one before, but I guess it's something you just get used to. My FS actually did a pap smear in our first consult so it's something they like you to be up to date with.

The guys have some blood tests and a sperm analysis, sometimes an ultrasound on the testes. You will likely have a post coital test, which is basically like a pap smear after you've had sex the night before to see if sperm are actually getting to your cervix, and it's timed so they can see if your cervix is receptive.

They didn't bother with a hysteroscopy since there was no evidence of blockages and my blood work indicated I had ovulated. We had to do IVF for male factor infertility though, so it's not necessarily done for every patient.

The most time consuming factor is having the blood tests which can be daily at certain times. Some days I only spent 10 mins at the clinic, but others I was waiting an hour because of all the people. Most clinics open early though so you can get in before work and the results are back same day.

It is only after the complete test they can ascertain any problems. Hysteroscopy is done when you have blockages and cervix is not receptive. Wish you all the luck
