    Default Reaction to antibiotics?

Hi all, 12 month old DS has had a nasty chest infection for almost a week. Not eating, lethargic, etc. I took him to the gp and he gave him strong antibiotics. It's taken a while but he's only just started eating a bit again and seems a little better.
He's had diarrhoea for a couple of days so doc said to down the dosage. This morning he got it again, this time tinged with a fair bit of blood. I called the doctor and he said to continue the meds and keep an eye on it. Don't know if I'm being a neurotic ftm, but it's got me worried sick. Anyone experienced this? Is it normal? Should've stayed off dr google...

My daughter had this too after taking antibiotics, apparently it's quite normal. I thought it was some kind of allergic reaction but apparently it's juts the gut clearing out the bad stuff. The blood would worry me a bit though. I stopped DD's antibiotics because of the diarrhoea. Doc said it was ok to do so because she had taken at least 5 days worth

Thanks. Yeah the diarrhoea I'm ok with, the blood is what's got me freaking out. Just wondered if anyone's had it happen. Doesn't seem right.

How many days has he been having the antibiotics?

It is normal for them to get diarrhea after a course of AB's as it removes both the bad AND good bacteria from their gut and diminished their gut health, but the blood would really concern me too. If it were me and I felt my babe had had a long enough course of AB's, I'd probably stop them and start immediately on a probiotic to start healing his gut. Does he have breast milk or formula or cows milk? Poor gut health can quite often lead to a temporary lactose intolerance, so if on cows milk or formula i'd switch to a lactose free alternative until his tummy is back to normal.

This is the 5th day. I'm surprised the doctor isn't concerned. He's still breastfed. If it's still there tomorrow I'll ask to stop the abs but the chest infection is taking a while to shift.
