    Default Chickenpox after being immunised?

    Hello all.

Childcare has reported a case a chickenpox. My DS has been vaccinated. I've Googled, and it seems to say that it's possible for vaccinated kids to catch chickenpox, and if they do get it, it will be much less severe. I couldn't find much about how common it might be for vaccinated kids to get chickenpox though. Has anyone got any ideas/info? Has you vaccinated child caught chickenpox?

Ps I'm just an anxious mum trying to understand the chances (partucularly since I'm pregnant), not someone questioning the value of the vaccination.

Second question- have you ever been exposed to someone with chickenpox when pregnant?

I sadly don't have any answers for you, but am curious too as we have had a case at our primary school this week.

Varicella vaccination is around 70-90% effective. So essentially 10-30% of vaccinated people may get CP if exposed to a person with active CP...if they develop disease it us much less severe (often only a few lesions).

DS had the vaccine and there were two outbreaks at his previous nursery and one at his current school and he didn't get chicken pox.
Most children in the UK don't have the vaccine so there were lots of kids with spots and off school.

My eldest got it last year at a girl guides camp and she's vaccinated. There were 7 girls who got it from the camp. I don't know if all the girls were immunised but I know 3 others were.

My two younger children didn't get it from their sister. It was a very mild case.

Thanks ladies. @Kaybaby, those stats sound reassuring. Where are they from?

I have no children yet myself (due with my first in June) but ....

My 2 sisters, my brother and myself were all vaccinated as kids.

On my 13th birthday I got chicken pox, as did my sister (11) and brother (8).

My baby sister (less than 1 year old) got it a few days later.

The baby had the least severe case, but my sister and brother got it pretty bad. Mine was by far the worst though - in fact the Dr said it was one of the worst cases he's seen.

So I guess .... yes, you can get it after vaccination

My oldest was vaccinated for it and still got it. She wasn't sick at all and only had a few spots, mainly on her back. The dr said at the time (this was about 4 or 5 years ago) he had seen an increase in the number of children vaccinated still getting but they don't present the usual way (or the children aren't as affected by it).
