Default Bulk-Billing may end for after-hours home doctor services - petition!

The government's Medicare review could mean the end of bulk-billed after hours doctor home visits.

If you use any of the after-hours home-visit doctor services for your children, yourself or other family members rather than visiting busy emergency departments late at night and the thought of these services no longer being bulk-billed worries you, you can join the Protect Home Visits campaign and sign the petition.

Do you use the after-hours home doctor services?

We don't have any home doctor or locum services available where we live - and the closest emergency dept is over an hour away. It means calling an ambulance more often than we would otherwise have to. I think a home visiting dr would be a great service, it should be available australia-wide.

I think it's a great service (not available to us sadly) that will clearly stop the emergency room being flooded with unnecessary visits. Definitely worth having & I will sign the petition.

    I have not used it.

Honestly, I would be fine paying a gap for me. But I think they should bulk bill children, pensioners and HCC holders (I think all doctors should).

It is an amazing service, especially with young children not needing to take them to an after hours clinic at night or on the weekends, public holidays.

My son had tonsillitis on a Saturday and it meant we were able to get antibiotics started straight away...

I can see that it would free up a lot of unnecessary visits to the emergency department!

I have signed the petition too

I haven't used the service yet, though I'm grateful that it exists. I have the magnets on my fridge with the phone numbers on them in case the need arises.

I think it should stay bulk billed, so I've signed the petition.

I've used it a number of times. Once for myself over a long weekend, again for myself after DD was born and the 13health nurse was concerned about a DVT. And a couple of times for DS when he got sick in the afternoon and I couldn't get him a doctor's appointment within a reasonable time frame because they were booked out for the next 2 days. These things (with the exception of the DVT worry) didn't warrant an emergency room visit, but they did require medical attention sooner rather than later. Without the home doctor service, we probably would have had to go to the ER for something minor to stop it becoming something major. Bulk billing is crucial, because I know there are a lot of people who use it solely because the regular GPs don't bulk bill and they just can't afford to see a doctor otherwise. These people would either have to end up going to the hospital for treatment, or end up going without necessary treatment.
