Honestly, job security is top priority.

Would I like to be in a job I hated? No, of course not. But if the alternative is never having security...

Just wanted to update you all. DH has finally made a decision regarding his career and he has chosen to stay with his flying job. Whilst the extra money would have been nice, we have managed on his wage over the last 3 years and he does enjoy his job. His passion and dedication to flying outwins the higher salary of the office job and ultimately he will be more happier, which makes me happy too. His old boss was obviously disappointed but encouraged him to let him know if anything changes in the future, which was reassuring. Anyway, thank you for your replies, it was very helpful.

This question has been answered but I really like this comment.

ordinarily i'd advocate choosing happiness over money. but the pilot gig actually sounds more stressful than his old office job. the unsociable hours plus lack of job security, coupled with less pay, it all sounds less than ideal.

you said if he leaves now, it'll be hard/impossible to get back into flying. could he not do the pilot gig as a side hobby? like rather than working for a major airline, is there not recreational pilot stuff he could do at weekends? fly a charter plane or do something similar within the private charter space? that way he could keep one foot in the pilots camp and not wave goodbye to his passion forever. but still enjoy the security and better pay from the office gig?
