    Default Progesterone pessary

    Hi ladies,

I was wondering if you had any trouble getting progesterone pessary in Aus, before heading overseas for DE-IVF?

The GP I asked was really hesitant about writing the script for me, because
    (1) progesterone is on a restricted schedule on the PBS;
    (2) she is not an IVF specialist.

My usual GP was unavailable, so I had to see another GP. That being said, it is the same medical practice, so I am afraid my usual GP would also turn down my request for a script.

Oh, I should add -- the GP has no issues with prescribing me oestrogen, only with the progesterone!

P.S. which brand of progesterone did you buy, and how much did it cost you? The chemist said at least $90 for Utrogestan 200 mg!

I got Oripro pessaries prescribed at 4 x 400mg per day by my FS - not my GP.

I was able to get them in Australia and in the end I bought them from the pharmacy downstairs from my clinic. I had to be on them for 15 weeks and ended up paying in the vicinity of $1,300 - $1,400 including postage (my clinic was in QLD and I am in VIC.)

The higher the dosage the more costly they are, and I think if they are over 200mg you can only buy them from a compounding clinic - major capital cities and large regional cities, but not small country towns like the one I live in

Have you had blood tests done to confirm if you actually need progesterone support? Not everyone does. I was on a high dose due to my age, and the fact that my progesterone dropped to 14 in the early stage of my pregnancy....

ETA: If you are having issues getting a script then perhaps when you go o/seas your FS could write you one there.

I think you will find a FS will need to prescribe them for you. I was on the 400mg ones and because they are not commercially available had to be made a compounding chemist. They cost me $91 for 40 and I was on 4 per day as after my overseas DE cycle my progesterone was only 11. Anything below 10 and you are at a greater chance of miscarriage. My FS like progesterone to be over 30. My compounding pharmacy will also make 200mg prssaries.. Same price but double the quantity. Another option is progesterone injections.. Also need to be compounded.. With prescription from pharmacist., but I had a reaction to these., so couldn't use these .

Where are you going for treatment?

Hi Blossom74 and kylie764 Sorry I missed your replies! I didn't get any notifications

I am going overseas to Greece for DE-IVF in 3 weeks, so I am buying some pessaries just in case I need to use them before I go. I will definitely be buying most, if not all, of the pessaries in Greece. Apparently, they are only 7 to 10 euros per box of 15!

I managed to see my usual GP recently and she had absolutely no qualms with prescribing the pessaries, so long as it is a private/ non-PBS script. PHEW! That's one problem solved there. She also advised me to buy the commercially available pessaries instead of having it compounded. You know, quality control and all...

But regardless, I received conflicting information from the compounding pharmacies I contacted. First one said they are not allowed to make it at a dose that is commercially available; and second one said no worries they could do it. I was quoted a higher price than the commercially available Utrogestan, so that made my decision super easy And my wallet is now $100 lighter...

I believe the compounding chemists are legally only allowed to make if not commercially available in WA. This is what I was told numerous times, though I know I can buy in Qld even if commercially available.. So not really sure either.

When I first went to Greece in 2013 you could only get in from compounding chemist qld, and it was horrid !! Good that you were able to get enough to start your cycle, much much better prices in Greece and no script necessary!! Just pop into any chemist over there and you can buy it over the counter, so much easier !!!
