Unhappy Childcare workers on strike. Thoughts?

Oh I actually think the childcare workers on strike was horrible. Surely there is another way to get their point across. Rather than what they did.

Also so I think a pay rise should be on a case by case basis. The childcare system that I have seen don't deserve the $20 an hour they get now. I have seen lazy workers content to do nothing!

I have seen some that that deserve a pay rise but I have not seen many at all.

So so it should definitely be on a case by case basis.

I don't think its horrible. They are underpaid for the qualifications they have and the job they do.

So my thoughts are - I hope that the government actually starts listening and gives better assistance to childcare workers and the childcare system.

I agree with @twinklify - childcare workers are underpaid. The ones at ds' childcare are amazing and definitely should be paid more.

I'm actually all for it. If they wanted to strike at DS's daycare I would have been happy to pick him up early.

I agree there are some poor staff out there. But increasing the pay rate will make it an attractive option to recruit and retain the good people and increases recognition they receive for their skills and qualifications.

My DS is happy when he's dropped. I can go to work knowing hes safe, cared for and nurtured. I dont know how they dont deserve a pay rise

I think the strike was an important step. The childcare workers at my dd's centre definitely deserve more money. They do an incredible job and truly are shaping little lives. However, I do worry the only way that'll happen is by raising fees. I already pay one of the highest rates for childcare in Canberra and having to pay more would put it out of reach. I just wish the centre would pass on a bit more of the money they're taking to the workers!

I think it's important for them to get their case across. It as also only a very small minority of centres in the entire country. My centre is amazing. My older ds when their until he went to school and DS2 had his first transition visit today and loved it. He had huge smiles on his when I watched him before I picked him up. My centre also pays their staff according to their qualifications. Cert 3 is base rate then diploma more again and they also have a few teachers there that are paid accordingly aswell

    I don't understand why they're horrible?

Strikes are usually the final straw, after a lengthy process of trying to reach an agreement in a less disruptive manner. If people aren't listening, why not take a stand and force them to?

Higher wages attract more capable and productive candidates, so the amount of "lazy workers" will drop if wages increase.

I fully support their strike. Childcare workers pay is disgraceful one of the reasons that I don't work in childcare anymore.

I read an article the other day that a early childhood teacher working in a childcare centre gets $26 an hour...that is a joke.

When my DDs were young there was no point in me going back to work in childcare and putting my DD in childcare. I would have ended up with $20 in hand at the end of the week.

Childcare workers have been after a pay rise for years, and not striking hasn't worked. Maybe striking will bring more attention and inconvenience the right people so that something is done.

I thought it was a great idea to strike. The pay they get is ridiculous for the care they take with our little ones. My centre in Canberra went on strike from 3pm and it really didn't bother me at all. When i dropped DD off this morning I asked one of the room leaders the amount she got paid per hour. $26... that's it $26. The educators at my centre deserve so much more! DD would not be Who she is today without them.
