I just thawed my last lot of milk and did a taste test compared to fresh. Fresh was fine. Thawed was horrendous! Smelled metallic, tasted like rancid soap, no wonder my poor bubbas didn't like it! I think it's a lipase issue. Now I have 3 months to figure out what to do for daycare!

My babies always hated thawed milk too, but fresh was fine. Mine also has that awful metallic smell when thawed. I would personally start expressing once daily (like evenings after bub is in bed, or morning, - one convenient time to build in to your daily routine). EBM can be stored 3 days in the fridge - so if you express daily, depending on which days you work, you should have 2 days of ebm to give to bubba & then have the third day to use it. If you work two days in a row (eg, mon & tues) you can use ebm expressed from sat-sun on monday, and ebm expressed at work monday to give to bub on tuesday. I fed two of my babies with breast and EBM, so expressed once to twice daily for a year - it judt becomes a part if your daily routine

    Default Baby refusing thawed milk

I read somewhere (I think it was the breastfeeding association's website) that the soapy/metallic smell is the lipase issue. Apparently if you bring freshly expressed BM to the boil (just) and then rapidly cool it before freezing, the heat denatures the lipase and makes it freeze/thaw without that soapy smell.

We haven't tried it but it seems to be successful for some.

Apparently you can scald the milk to deal with the lipase issue - but if you can give fresh, you won't have to worry about that! Good luck with it ☺
