Just like 'bleeding heart', the phrase 'politically correct' is almost always used by people to devalue the opinions others by diminishing their thoughts to a mindless adherence to the 'hive mind' rather than respecting that their values and fundamental beliefs may have led them to their particular perspective. It is used as a dismissive label.

The fact that it may be a majority view means nothing other than many people may have similar values.

How about them editing the Enid Blyton books to remove the names **** and Fanny? I think that's stupid but apparently it wasn't politically correct. If I'm not understanding something let me know.

I dont think thats political correctness necessarily only acknowledging the way language has evolved. **** is commonly accepted as a rude word. Even on this forum filled with adults its just 4 stars rather than the actual word.

What did they change it to? Maybe it's to make it more relevant as those names are not really used these days.

    Default politically incorrect shizel.

What about examples that aren't as serious- not talking about bigoted views.

Like the case in Sydney where a Dressed up Santa couldn't say HoHoHo because derogatory to women

There was also a case in the UK where a recruitment company couldn't use the term reliable and hardworking as it was a offensive to unreliable and lazy people

    Rick and Franny.
And they left Bess. Not really any more relevant.

Well they could not name her Ress (seems someone got happy with the letter R).

Yes, this exactly. The names were changed due to the more recent sexu@l connotations those names now have, which they didn't have at the time. Reading those names now would likely be distracting kids away from the actual story with constant giggling. It's not 'political correctness' - just updating for a modern context.

I have to say I agree with the consensus. Political correctness gone mad is generally used to shout down people who argue against views that will upset a minority group of people I'm quite happy with being kind to others, doing my best to understand and empathise with their stance, encourage inclusivity and agree with finding ways to ensure that those are marginalised/disadvantaged/discrimintated against are actually helped and not left to suffer.

Also, would like to respectfully point out, OP, that calling such behaviours "politically correct" and adding that it is going over the top is also labelling.
