A vet in private practice will have lots of overheads eg staff salaries, premises rent, drugs and equipment etc etc.

If we had to pay in full for meds/procedures for ourselves how much would it cost?

We either have public or private health that pay for most or all of our healthcare. Except with vets it is all out of pocket.

Vets have to pay for the same/similar drugs, staff, all the other stuff.

Some vets may overcharge but most try not to.

My apologies, I didn't mean to infer that Doctors and Scientists don't get paid at all. I just think they are underpaid for what they do/contribute....

A friend of mine is a vet - she's 5 years out of uni and is now working in a small country town and gets paid $45K a year. I think that's appalling.

True, my dog has had some expensive tests too so that equipment would be heaps.

Don't get me wrong, its worth every penny. I love my fur baby to bits

Default Australia Day and Australian of the year

Award wage currently is about the $45k mark.

One clinic I worked at needed to invoice $6k worth of work everyday to cover the costs of opening the doors. No profit or anything.

The average vet clinic profit is 5%.

A lot of our work is heavily discounted just to get people to desex, we then have to make that up elsewhere.

ETA: $46,000 ish. Or $23.40 ish an hour.
