Default Australia Day and Australian of the year

FINALLY. A deserving winner!!! He actually used stem cells to help a paraplegic walk again.

I for one have been unhappy with the past choices.

I was very happy to see this winner. Truly deserved.

Who have you been unhappy with? I like it when Dr's win. I do think it's really good when we recognise Dr's who have dedicated their lives to groundbreaking research. Where would we be without them

I think they were all very worthy candidates. It must have been a tough choice for the judges.

    Couldn't agree more!

It really irks me when sportsmen/women and actors get it.

IMO the award should be reserved for people who contribute more to the community than just entertainment

But a lot of actors and sportsmen/women also do great things in the wider community.

    *Some* might.

But they also get paid for it, and recognition in their own fields.

No, I think the award is for more deserving work than that. Look at Rosie Batty. All the terrible things that poor woman has been thorough. And yet she works tirelessly for others so that they may not go through what she did.

Or consider someone who works in science to find cures to the cruel and painful diseases from which some people suffer. The surgeons who will risk their jobs to do surgeries that most deem 'too risky.' The animal rights activists who put themselves on the line to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

Those are things truly deserving of the award IMO.

They do pretty well for themselves. if there is money to spare in healthcare staffing I think it should go to nurses, allied health, support staff.
