Default When to start prep in Victoria - so confused.

    Hi all,

I’m seeking help of fellow Victorian parents about when to start Prep. I found the information from the Department of Education super confusing.

If I understand correctly, one must start school the year she turn 6. Therefore the kids who start Prep this year are born between 1 Jan 2011 and 31 Dec 2011. This is pretty straightforward and exactly what I’m accustomed to in France.
However I read that younger kids have the option to start early, so those born between 1 Jan 2012 and 30 Apr 2012 can start this year too. From what I read it seems pretty much optional.

But when I read about 4yo Kinder program, the intake for this year is from 1 May 2012 to 30 Apr 2013. Children born between 1 Jan and 30 Apr 2012 are labelled as “delaying” their entry in 4yo Kinder.

    So confusing right??

Can someone help me and explain what is the official 12 months intake for Prep/Foundation and Kinder? Is it from 1 Jan to 31 Dec or is it from 1 May to 30 Apr?

Children must be 5 by April 30th in the year they start school. So if you have an April baby they could start school at 4 and 9months.

You don't have to send them at age 4 if they aren't ready, as long as they go to school the year they turn 6. So it's really only Jan to Apr babies that get a choice of which year to go.

I'm not sure what's considered official. But if you have a child born between Jan-Apr you can choose to start them at 4/5 Or 5/6.

Default When to start prep in Victoria - so confused.

So if I read that right there is a potential 16 months intake for each year?

From 1 Jan 20X1 to 30 Apr 20X2 will start prep same year?

How does that even make sense??

    4 seems so young.

Personally I would start them later

It's just the way it is. No one ever said laws made sense!
I would definitely hold back, if it were me making a decision about my children. So many studies have shown that being older as opposed to a "youngun"" is more beneficial. Some 4 year olds who start school early are still such babies compared to a lot of the ones who turn 6 early in the year.

Yes so technically your 4yo can start school provided they turn 5 by the 30th of April.

Your 5 year old can start school providing they turn 6 by the 30th of April.

Your 6 year old has to start prep if not already in school.

You have to start at the start of the year though, there's no term intakes like other states, they either start at the start of the year or wait.

So 4 yo can start provided they turn 5 before 30th of April but 5yo MUST start if they are not really into school.

Sounds like the rule is that you need to be 5yo to start school however you can start 4 months early if you wish.

It makes things so bloody complicated

I'd be happy to held my son back however kindergartens seem to think he should already be in 4yo Kinder which means starting school at 4yo

He can always do two years of 4 year old kinder if you want him to. As a Prep teacher, I would strongly recommend that you don't start your son at school before he turns 5.
