Default IVF and AHM Health Insurance

    Hi,

We have been told by our fertility specialist that we are going to require IVF due to my husbands irregular shaped sperm. We have top hospital and extra's cover. Just wondering if anyone has gone through IVF with AHM and if so do they cover much of it?

    Thanks,
    Niamh

I'm not with AHM, I'm with Medibank with too hospital and top extras, but all private health funds (to my knowledge) only cover for when you're admitted to hospital during IVF (i.e. For egg collection). The actual management fee etc is not covered at all. However, a large portion of it is covered by Medicare. (I can't remember the exact amounts but I think our fee was something like $7k and we paid $3.5k.

If you need more than one round of IVF, you will have reached the Medicare threshold, which means you'll get even more back from Medicare on the subsequent rounds. (Make sure you sign you and your husband up for the Medicare safety net right away if you haven't already)

My suggestion is to call and ask them what they cover and hiw much.

Some tend to differ a bit in hiw much they cover. Also be careful as I know BUPA changed their 'top tier' cover and now there is another that covers IVF specifically - whereas pregnancy is covered on a lower tier.
