Default WDYT? Harmless fun or promotion of rape culture?

    https://thewest.com.au/news/wa/brass...-ng-b88342225z

For non clickers, a pub in Perth has been promoting their upcoming NYE Frat party with some hand painted banners hanging off their balcony. Slogans include:
    MILFS and DILFS welcome
You teach her morals we teach her oral
Our couch pulls out we don't

Facebook reviews have been stopped on their page. That hasn't stopped the negative reviews however with people heading to google reviews

The hotel management issued the following apology:
    IMG_1483021126.202307.jpg

So what do you think? Harmless fun and people need to calm down? Tasteless but not worth getting upset about? Worse than tasteless and their business is getting what it deserves?
Is the apology enough? Something else entirely.

This is really tasteless, talentless marketing. I'm from Perth and what shocked when I realised what they'd done...and that the banners were real! I just think there are more intellectual and appropriate ways to market a party.

I don't usually react to these topics/posts but I also don't think their apology was enough...too generic.

While posters like this may not directly lead to someone raping another person it is another piece of the jigsaw puzzle that creates a rape culture. I would be going one step further and canceling the 'frat' party otherwise the management hasn't really learned anything.

The MILFs and DILFs slogan is ok. Well tacky but not something I'd be up in arms about. The other two are pretty gross.

The first one is pretty tacky but doesn't offend me. The other two are disgusting and totally inappropriate. It would put me off ever going to that business.

How someone thought it was a good idea to hang signs like that up is beyond me!

In what world is that acceptable? That, right there, is rape culture - the acceptance and normalisation of sexual violence and sexual coercion. There is no question about it, no grey/fuzzy line. If anyone would even question that this is not part of rape culture or that it's 'just harmless fun' then they are part of the problem.

"Rape culture includes jokes, TV, music, advertising, legal jargon, laws, words and imagery, that make violence against women and sexual coercion seem so normal that people believe that rape is inevitable. Rather than viewing the culture of rape as a problem to change, people in a rape culture think about the persistence of rape as "just the ways things are".
ETA: This is not about being offended. Being offended is not a reason to remove such advertising. This is about the normalisation of the gross and harmful attitudes to women that rape culture perpetuates and assumes men must partake (because if you don't then your sexuality is in question).

    Disgusting and insulting.

Rape culture builds and women are pushed further down every time an incident like this is referred to as 'harmless fun' or 'boys being boys'.

I also think they knew exactly the response they would get and did it anyway as it would increase the interest in the party and get them more business.

I came in to say something similar to this but not as eloquent!

I have seen FB comments in relation to this and people do not get it. 'A bunch of signs is not going to get someone raped' - yes it is. And the kicker is that noone will think it is a big deal and that it is 'ok' because society does not think it's a big deal.

Considering the alarming number of women who are raped in the college campus scene in the USA, this is completely vulgar to me.

For anyone who thinks this isn't offensive, please watch the documentary The Hunting Ground.

I'm pleased to see the public outrage on this matter. It's completely warranted.
