For me choosing the ring together was really special.
His proposal was just as beautiful and special and a surprise even though he had no ring.
For me the proposal was the special part and the ring secondary to that.
My diamond is at the colourless end of the scale, so even though it's not huge (0.8ct) it's very white and sparkly.
If DH had picked a ring himself he would have gotten it right too. This is just how it worked out for us

We had been together 5 years so had started talking about marriage and I had pointed out a few styles I liked to give him an idea.
It turned out he proposed in Vanuatu as a spur of the moment thing so had no ring. When we got back home we just got a ring together.

I would have been happy for a surprise

This is a good point actually. I accidentally found out how much DH paid when he was in the phone to the insurance company to insure it as it wasn't covered on our home and contents.

He spent WAAAAY too much. It was more than my fairly decent new car I had bought at the time. I actually felt really bad he had spent so much. But I had been waiting 8 years so.....

I love my ring, he chose it but knew that I liked the princess cut and white gold. My diamond is so close to perfect and is so close to what I would have chosen for myself.

He spent way more than I would have expected BUT it was pre DS and I think I deserve it

    This was us too.

DH proposed in Fiji and I was completely surprised.

We had discussed marraige in general, had been together for 3 years ... but we were very young so it was something that in my mind was a fair way off.

We picked a ring together which I love.

DH picked mine, he knew my taste in jewellery and he nailed it.

I get a lot of compliments about my ring and I like that the classic design won't date.

One thing people often say which really upsets me is "gosh that's a beautiful ring, he must really love you". The size/quality of an engagement ring has no impact on how much someone loves me, it's actually pretty offensive.

There used to be a thread showing off rings, we should do that again. I love looking at people's rings.

DH proposed with a cheap toy ring and we designed the actual ring together and had it made.

DH knows me well when it comes to the things that matter but he has no idea about jewellery, clothes etc. I love him but the thought of him picking something I would have to wear every day forever stressed me out. He knew me well enough to know that and he was fine with it. I think he actually preferred it this way, it took the pressure off him.

Dh chose my ring and had it when he proposed. I'd pointed out rings I liked in passing and he honestly did an amazing job. It's not big, flashy, or overly expensive but it suits my taste perfectly.
