What's your budget? For the $20-$30 you could get a decent sparkling, grant burges and jansz are nice.
If you're going in with other people and can spend a bit more I'd go bollinger or veuve

Definitely go with Champagne. It is so special as a gift. Georg Jensen have a bottle out now with a stopper. 2 for $80 if you can find it. Otherwise i agree with Mumm or Moet or an aussie one Chandon.

I don't drink wine, cider or beer at all but I have noticed at work that Sav Blanc is by far the most popular wine, followed by Chardonnay. In terms of brands the most common request is for Australian or local. The most popular red is Pepperjack Shiraz.

Default What's your favourite alcoholic drink?

I'd buy a nice white wine or champagne. Im sure they'd be appreciative of anything

I agree with others about a nice bottle of bubbles! Veuve, Mumm, Mo√ęt.
I bought a couple of bottles of Australian Pinot noir rose (to cook with allegedly) and it was quite nice - la Boheme or something like that it was called.
I drink Sav Blanc - just anything labelled from "Marlborough" I personally like
