Default Canberrans! How early should I book for the birth centre/hospital?

Hi everyone! Would love some advice, and even better advice from some Canberra mums out there!

I'm 5 weeks pregnant with my first bub and just went to visit the GP today for some blood tests. I asked her whether I should book in for the Calvary birth centre now and she said that we can do that at the 12 week mark. I can understand why she would say that but I've heard from so many people in Canberra say that you pretty much need to book as soon as you find out you are pregnant because there is so much demand for the two birthing centres here in the ACT.

Questions I have is, can I put my name down without a referral or do I need to get a referral from GP first?

How early would I have to book a place in any case?

Are there are costs to for the birthing centre? Any good stories from people who have used the Woden one or Calvary?

    Thanks in advance!

Now! I'd call them tomorrow and tell them
You want to get into the birth centre and they'll let you know what you referals you need. It books out very fast.

I went through the Calvary birth centre and loved it. Both birth centres you need to call by about 6 weeks to have your best chance at getting a place. A friend of mind called at 8 weeks and missed out. I don't think you need a gp referral at that point though.

Yep straight away! I was fine to get in but Ive had friends who missed out. Ask to go on thr waiting list if they dont have a spot

I used the one at Woden and loved loved loved it. I had a water birth and I still loved the experience 2 years on. I loved my midwife who was amazing.

Wow, that's a great review @smallpotatoes! Do you know if they will still accept my booking or name on the waiting list if I don't have a GP referral yet?

Im pretty sure you just ring and book with your due date and then you bring along the GP referal later on. You should scoot in at 5 weeks but I'd do it tomorrow. Very easy to get a Gp referal too.

Just an update and for anyone else interested! I called and it looks like you need to go to the information session on the Monday nights from 5-6pm before you can register and also, you don't need a GP referral as yet.
