Default Vacccum cleaner - brush up or down?

So - the big question today -

When you vaccuum, do you have the brush bit up or down? For hard floors? For carpets?

My DP and I just realised we each do it differently, and we both think we're right and the other is wrong!

Brush down on hard floors to protect from scratching and up on carpet to get a closer suction

That is in relation to rotating brush heads - not the brush that pops up and down at the front.

This. Brush up on hard wood floors scratches them.

Ooh subbing! I have always done brush down on hard floors and brush up on carpet; maybe I'm doing it wrong!

Hm we must have a weird vacuum. It doesn't actually have pop down brushes. The only brush is the rotating one which comes up and down.

I think the newer ones might. I am pretty sure dysons do.
