Default Could I have been pregnant with twins? M/C one but not the other? TMI

    Hi Ladies,

I'm still in shock and wondering what on earth happened....

My HCG levels had been on the higher side of normal for a single pregnancy & was more than doubling every 48hrs.

5 wks ago I started lightly spotting, went to hospital and was told it was a threatened m/c. HCG level was 74,000. No scan was done but one was booked for 2 days later & discharged.

I had the scan that took less than a minute, I was in the room no more than 3 minutes. He put the probe in one spot and didn't move it (it was not a transvaginal scan which surprised me). Found one sac with viable pregnancy & strong heartbeat. There was no blood found around the baby.

5 days later I started bleeding heavily with clots and what I can only describe as lumps. It didn't stop so I went via ambulance to the nearest hospital where I was told I had definitely miscarried. I'd lost 1.5 units of blood & my HCG levels had dropped so the doctor said there was no chance of the baby surviving. The OB on duty refused to see me & refused the doctors request for a scan. I was then discharged with instructions to see my GP if I developed symptoms related to retained product. I was 7wks + 5. HCG 224,000 (taken exactly 7 days from last HCG).

Today I went in to see my OB and talk to her about what happened. I'd been getting lower abdominal pain and was worried there may have been something left behind. She was lovely & had the hospital squeeze me in for a scan. To everyone's shock the scan showed a 13w + 6 healthy baby!

I was in shock, still am, so didn't ask what caused the massive bleed but sitting here now I am wondering if I could have had twins.

Has anyone had this happen? Was it a twin or some other reason for the bleed?

    Thanks in advance

It sounds very probably to me. Glad you got your miracle bub. I would put in a complaint to the hospital.

    I agree with @Wise Enough.

Every single scan I have had lasted at least 15 mins - maybe more (including dating scans where I was just over 4 weeks pregnant).

I would also put in a complaint.

    How are you coping?

Could possibly have been a twin M/C. I am currently 15 weeks pregnant and when I went for my first OB appointment at 9 weeks, she scanned me and saw a second sac that was at that point empty. She said that that embryo had likely implanted but then not developed very far. She said that more then likely the sac would just be reabsorbed by the body but that there was a chance that it could bleed more like a traditional MC and just to call the hospital and get a scan to confirm it was just the second sac. Thankfully I havent had any bleeding. The second sac was still there at my 12 week scan but was getting smaller so will hopefully just be absorbed.

You should have ABSOLUTELY have had a scan after losing the clots. What if they had just booked you in for a D&C without a scan? They would have killed your baby!!! Definitely put in a complaint, please, even for the sake of other women who will come after you with the same problem.

As for twins, at 7.5 weeks you would probably have seen the little embryo in its sac amongst the clots you passed. I've heard of many many women pass massive clots and their baby still be fine.

    But, you'll never know huh

    Thanks Ladies :-)

My OB is putting in a complaint to the hospital concerned and has asked me to write down what I went through that night to include with hers. I earlier left out the part where I was left for 2.5hrs lying in a pool of my own blood whilst still bleeding. So not only did they get it wrong, the "treatment" I received was traumatising.

When the clots/lumps first started passing I was on the loo so couldn't see what they were. The only one I did see and what I thought was the baby, came out in that first 2.5hrs in hospital. When I changed I looked at it I couldn't tell one way or the other, and to be honest I didn't want to see. Neither the nurse or doctor looked at it either.

I kid you not the scan I had at 7wks lasted a minute. The guy put the probe just above my pubic bone in the middle, pressed down hard and never moved it. I even said to him are you sure there's not another in there as I've had pain just under my left ovary. He didn't even look. I have never ever had a scan last less than 20 minutes, even the scan confirming my first pregnancy was a blighted ovum lasted longer than that dating scan! This scanning place isn't associated with the hospital.

I would never of allowed them to do a D&C without at least 1 scan. There was so much blood I didn't think there was anything left in me and as I'd never had a natural miscarriage before I believed the Dr when he said it was all over.

I'm coping pretty well, writing and talking about what happened has really helped. I am a little worried about the fact I stopped taking folic acid & iodine at 7.5wks but as my OB said there's nothing we can do about it now.

We're both really happy & excited all over again.

I'm so sorry you went through that and yes it was definately possible that it was twins. My first pregnancy 10+ yrs ago was twins and non identical. One passed at 10wks and the other was 12wks. The clots themselves the first time round was also the placenta although not huge coming out. Not a pleasant experience for anyone but yours is traumatising to say the least. Stay strong now is the best you can do.
