    I'd do it as a day trip, but maybe pack an overnight bag just in case. It would depend too on what time the party was. At least if it's an afternoon party your DS can run around, wear himself out you could stop somewhere halfway home for dinner and with any luck he'll be ready for bed if not asleep by the time you get home!

    Really depends on what time the afternoon party ends. If it ends late, I would probably not drive 3 hours back home!
