    Default Black tie/formal?

DH is attending an event next month. The invite says Black Tie/Formal.

I thought black tie meant tuxedo but the formal is making me think it's not mandatory. All the guys going from our company are wearing suits.

Is it ok for DH to wear a suit? We actually just had him one made so it would be nice to have a place to wear it. It's dark charcoal with a vest. He has a black tie. Also, does he need to wear a white shirt or can he wear another colour like gray or dark blue?

I'm hopeless with this type me thing. It's awards for construction if it makes a difference.

If it was my husband I would get him to wear a full suit, including vest and tie. I would likely send him in a white shirt though.

Thanks. It is a full suit with a vest. So that's ok? I really don't want to have rent a tux when we just bought this suit. It's probably the only chance he'll get to wear it 😀

@TheGooch is the etiquette queen here.

To me, black tie also means tux but if others are doing a suit and he has a suit then do the suit.

I would do a white shirt. And personally a fun bowtie. And a fun tie. But that's me...

Sometimes hosts don't always know what they mean by their own dress codes which can make it really hard for guests!

Black tie means this is a fancy pants do, and you need to get your tuxedo dry cleaned.

Formal means a dark suit and tie, or a tux.

Where is the event being held? That usually gives a few more hints.

As does the time of day the event starts. I understand black tie and formal events don't start until after 6pm - although that could be more of a northern hemisphere thing.

I think that because they haven't said "strictly black tie" and have combined black tie and formal, then a dark suit (with vest) will be fine. Especially since we're talking a properly tailored suit. It will fit him better than something hired probably. Well fitting clothes can sometimes make a dress code less important I think.

I think since they've said black tie/formal the suit you've described will be fine. It sounds really nice.

If they had said 'strictly black tie' I'd take that to mean a tuxedo.

Also I think being a construction awards a suit is fine. My dad and brother are both in the construction industry and have been to many of these types of events and neither have ever worn a tuxedo. If it were like a gala for a charity or a wedding a tuxedo might be more appropriate but I really think a nice well tailored suit will be fine for a construction industry event.

Thanks everyone. It starts at 7:00 and it's at the Star Casino. I think he'll be alright with the suit too. Can't wait to see him in it
