What were you doing back in '96?
I was in year 11 at high school.
Life for me was pretty much about socialising and partying!
I started my first job in '96 (retail, ladies clothing).
Towards the end of the year I got an older boyfriend, which was the start of a 3.5 year relationship.
I regularly went to some really cool concerts. I went to the Big Day Out (back in the days where it was legit and all about the music, not just posers frolicking around in swimsuits).
I got my P's and drove around in my mum's Gemini.
I frequented op shops and most of my clothes were 2nd hand. I would have definitely been classed as a 'grunger', though it was ultimately not cool to use that term back then

Your life, 20 years ago (1996)?
I was 9. In 4th grade. Had just moved from Brisbane to Sydney and to my 6th school.
I learned to roller blade that year.
My best friends name was Laura and I recently (last year) got reacquainted with her via Facebook.
I had my first and only slumber party for my birthday.
Edit to add;
My favourite bands were stuff like AC/DC which is still true
I wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. About to study to become a paramedic (so similar field still)
And I wanted a big family before I got "old" (turned 30 hahahhahahahha). I have 4 kids and turning 30 next year.

I was in year 12. I was young and turned 17 so all my older friends were driving around in their first cars and I was still catching the bus.
I was a bit of a dork, didn't do anything naughty and was a pretty straight kid. I had a boyfriend who I know call my husband, though at that time we only dated for 3 months from December onwards into '97. For the better part of the year I was totally in love with a guy I worked at Big W with who I still think about fondly to this day. He sort of disappeared off the face of the earth and I never heard from him again.
I tried my first cigarette that year and got drunk for the first time at the end of year social party. For the most part though I never, ever drank. I remember I shared a hip flask sized bottle of Jim Beam with a friend. Gross.
I only kissed one boy that entire year which was at said party. His name was Frazer. I didn't even kiss my boyfriend (now husband) . We were so innocent and pretty much just held hands 😂
I was worried about uni and study and remember just stressing out the whole year and being so damn relieved when it was all over.
I wish I had gone easier on myself.

I was 11 and in year 6. I was school captain. I spent my weekends with my best friend and was obsessed with The Saddle Club books. I wanted to be a lawyer when I grew up.

I turned 11 and was in year 5. For the whole year I carried around a bag of assorted 'treasures' that I used to give to kids who were crying at lunchtime
My family moved out of town during this year, and I got my own cat. I called him Jesse and he was awesome.
I wanted to be a jockey when I finished school, despite having never actually ridden a horse
