The Penny Scallan canvas backpacks are great. Dd has used one for 2 years and it's still like new.
This size is more than ample (even if you need to pack lunch), but still small enough for a child to carry.
Shop around, because you can definitely find them cheaper.

I second the penny scallan ones, my DD used it for childcare which kept nap time sheets change of clothes etc. they are really good quality. I got mine at trade secret for $19.99 or around that.
