While doing some research I came across this from RCH
http://www.rch.org.au/feedingdifficulties/development/physical-sensory-oral-motor-development/
it states:
It doesn't say a baby needs to be sitting independently.Signs of readiness for first foods:
Good head control.
Mouths hands and toys independently.
Able to sit in an upright position with support either on the lap or in a suitable high chair.
Tongue thrust has diminished.
Opens mouth when food is offered.
Enjoys watching others eat.

He is
he was 5 months last week. I've been giving him things every now and again. He had some watermelon today. I was contemplating waiting but I feel in my gut that he's ready. He's just so eager to eat and the moment I placed the watermelon on his table he picked it up and ate it.

My boy is 5 months next week and I have been giving him bits and pieces from my plate, pumpkin and potato and little bit of rice, before I can put it on his table he grabs my hand to go straight to the mouth.
I've also been letting him play with an empty sippy cup so he gets used to shoving that in his mouth.
I'm actually really looking forward to properly starting solids, watching him discovering food is going to be great. Messy but fun.
