I have had the mirena for a year. It took about 4 cycles to settle everything, I was having irregular periods and bleeding in between but I persevered and it settled down. Since then I get a very light regular period, sometimes only spotting for a day. The mirena was not painless when put in, not that uncomfortable even. No weight gain either. I had it put in because I do not want anymore children and even though we did IVF for the 3 darlings we have I didn't want to take any chance. My periods were always regular previously but sometimes heavy.
