I always aim for at least 8 hours on low. Generally up to 10. I use my slow cooker all the time, I currently have all my left overs from last nights pork roast (about 1.5kg worth) in there with a honey bbq type sauce as we will be doing pulled pork tonight.

Roasts are a really good thing to start with. Put meat in and turn on. Cook until it's soft.
I find that I need stronger flavour in my slow cooker. More herbs/garlic than normal. Also less liquid than normal.
