My DS 2.5yrs woke up Sat night struggling for breath and with a barking cough. He had had a cold but not barking cough woke 11pm with it anyway we got through with steamy bathroom nurofen etc. Doc prescribed redipred Sunday he had dose Sun and Mon that was all doc said to give. Have had sleepless nites though worried. I am hoping that the two doses are enough and have calmed the inflamation..... it should have shldnt it??? Is it catchy? Wld he have got it from another child.?

Yes, redipred is strong so should give enough relief. Croup is contagious. It can flair up again so watch in a few days and if it does back to doc or get the home doc out. If really bad go to hosp.

Hi there, 3 yr old is prone to this. It is very distressing. If she wakes with the barking cough and breathing difficulties we go straight to hospital for steroids, then use a prescription for 2 or 3 nights. I always worry the first night off steroids! Since getting an oil heater in her room it has been better.

My 4yo gets it almost monthly during winter. He is asthmatic as well which doesn't help. Currently he, my 6yo, 3yo and 2yo all have the barky cough and temps. It's stressing me so bad. And yes, very contagious.

Croup is the worst! My youngest struggles with it a lot. Redipred will work in 2-3 days, but I always find after day 1 she still has the bark.
Maybe try a cool air purifier too? I used to have a vicks steam one and it didn't do anything. Whereas now I have a nature direct air purifier and that makes a difference.

Cold air can help settle down the airways in the midst of an episode, rug them up and then take them outside if it's cold enough, or open the freezer and have them breathe in the air from that.
Got that tip from an er dr on the fifth hospital trip for croup in a month. He told me that often the children are heaps better by the time we get to hospital because they've been out in the cold air on their way to the dr lol.
