Default Hair loss/ thinning help ☹️

    Hi,

For the last few months I have noticed an increased shedding of my hair and it has reached the stage that I have a noticeable thinning around my temples in particular. The scalp is showing and my hairline is further back than it was. I'm finding it quite distressing and dread looking in the mirror or brushing my hair. I have such fine hair naturally that I can't afford to lose much more!

I was on the Brenda / Diane type contraceptive pills for years as I've always had issues with acne, but I ceased this a few months ago. I don't know if it's related but my hair problems seemed to have started since I stopped the pill. I really don't want to go on it again because of the risks (I'm 38), it also really messes with me emotionally and I'm using an alternative treatment now for my skin.

Has anyone had any experience with this? When I google it, I come across a tonne of hair loss forums and there never seems to be many happy stories of hair regrowth, just sad women desperate for help and its freaking me out!

I am seeing my dr tomorrow and will obtain a referral for a dermatologist, but it may take a couple of months to see them.

I know there are worse things that can happen in life, and it's not all about looks. But I'm already quite damaged self esteem wise from suffering from acne since I was 11. I have only in the past few yrs come to a peace with myself so I really wish this wasn't happening to me.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

Get checked for all the auto immune disorders with your GP (simple blood test).... i have lupus with thinning hair at times. Also hyperthyroidism (overactive) can cause hair loss.

Thanks, I know my thyroid is ok as I had bloods taken for a general check up a couple of months ago. Would a standard blood test checking cholesterol/ thyroid etc have shown up an auto immune disorder, or is that a specific test?

My hair started falling out like mad after I had my daughter, and thinning out in the same spots you described. My hair is reallllly thick though so not that noticeable, but I got it cut really short (into a bob) and it's helped a lot!

Yep I've got thinning hair in the same spots as you I'm presuming it's post partum hair loss, bit delayed as she's 10 months now and it only started about 2 months ago.
Not sure about biological causes but see your gp to discuss as I think there are many reasons but when I was getting my hair cut last time I mentioned to my hairdresser. He told me his hair started thinning last year and he went onto nioxin products which he'd never used before and he said there has been a definite improvement for him. I trust him not to just be up selling me products as he's a friend of DH. It's expensive but might be worth a trial to build the hair up as well as seeing if you can find the cause and treat that. Good luck it's distressing I know. If mine continues I will try nioxin myself.

No - there is a specific test where they look for anti nuclear antibodies

I have a hair apt already booked for Friday to chop it all off! I don't really suit short hair, but it will be better than long straggly hair lol

Yay! I was really upset about chopping it off because it took me 3 years to grow it out from a pixie cut and it was down to my boobs! But it's sooooo much easier to look after and my 6 month old can't reach it anymore and rip it out haha!
